Memo: DigiScripts™ vs. COVID-19

DigiScripts™ LLC supports and encourages the implementation of electronic prescribing (e-Prescribing) as an improvement in the delivery of healthcare in general, and additionally to help protect people most at-risk in our country from exposure to COVID-19.

Of everyone who becomes infected with COVID-19, up to 80% will have either no symptoms at all, or only a mild illness (similar to having the common cold). There are, however, members of the community who are at greater risk of serious illness and who will greatly benefit from reducing their risk of exposure to the virus.

• People in quarantine, or self-isolating, due to suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19.
• People at greater risk of serious illness if they contract COVID-19, such as persons over 60 years old, and/or those with hypertension, diabetes, asthma, among other chronic conditions.
• Front line medical staff, including physicians, pharmacists and staff working in labs and imaging centers.
• Members of the general community, as a result of being more able to follow social distancing guidelines (by avoiding crowds at pharmacies).

E-prescribing will lessen the risk of infection being spread at:

Doctors’ offices (where patients wait to be seen and to get a prescription)

Pharmacies (where patients again wait to hand in prescriptions, for the scripts to be filled, and then to collect and pay for medication)

Instead of the normal paper prescription, e-prescribing will allow a doctor to prepare a digital prescription that will then be electronically shared with a pharmacy. The pharmacist may then prepare the medication and have it ready for the patient (or someone on the patient’s behalf) to collect. This measure will allow for patients to obtain, and continue to take, their normal medications, and/or to access appropriate treatment if they become ill. Individuals in self-isolation will also have access to prescribed medicines, as delivery options are also available with DigiScripts™ LLC.
